 BLACK LIVES MATTER

Dear Kranti Family,

Acknowledging the momentum of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, we recognize the necessity of our voice and actions. While our response may have been delayed, it wasn't born of indifference but of a genuine intent to learn and understand. Your cause matters to us, and we are committed to contributing positively.

Yoga embodies unity—it transcends the individual self. It's imperative that we, as practitioners, align ourselves with crucial movements like this. Our initial stride involves self-education, a vital step for both individual and communal growth. Following this, we are determined to take meaningful action. Our ongoing commitment revolves around consistent practice in both learning and activism.

In solidarity and determination.

As Patanjali eloquently expressed in the Yoga Sutra 1.14, the essence of practice lies in consistent, wholehearted dedication over time. At Kranti Yoga, we recognize that the challenges of racism, inequality, and the underrepresentation of people of color in yoga extend far beyond our singular establishment—they pervade the global yoga community. With our platform and reach, we bear a responsibility not to turn a blind eye or disengage from these critical issues.

Yoga, fundamentally, embodies unity. We are interconnected, and these issues affect us all. We acknowledge the need for meaningful action within our sphere of influence. It's our commitment to not just acknowledge but actively address these systemic disparities. We aim to amplify silenced voices, foster inclusivity, and provide opportunities for those marginalized by oppressive structures.

In embracing our interconnectedness.

We acknowledge our imperfections while actively striving to improve. Community lies at the core of our endeavors, and we're committed to being part of the remedy. Here's our approach to fostering inclusivity, representation, and unity both within our physical space and across our online platforms.

Firstly, we're launching a scholarship program for our yoga teacher training courses. This initiative aims to support individuals marginalized in the yoga community due to financial constraints, yet devoted to their practice. Yoga is universal, transcending backgrounds, religions, ages, genders, races, nationalities, physical abilities, and financial circumstances. We wholeheartedly welcome you.

Secondly, we aim to leverage our online platforms to advocate for equality within the yoga sphere, primarily through education. We intend to educate our audience on the authentic teachings of yoga. Ahimsa, the foremost Yama, signifies non-harm and extends beyond mere non-violence. Today, ahimsa takes the form of direct action—actions aimed at dismantling systems that propagate white supremacy and racial inequality. It means standing up for social justice, utilizing your voice, actions, vote, and energy whenever and wherever necessary.

Thirdly, if you've directly experienced the anguish of oppression, we extend our heartfelt apologies for the suffering you've endured to have your voice heard. If you have feedback or suggestions on how we can contribute positively to the yoga community, this is a safe space for you to share. Your input matters, and we genuinely want to learn from you.

With openness and determination.

As we part ways, we leave you with these thoughts, dear community:

Consider the profound influence of the Black Lives Matter movement in effecting positive change beyond your personal sphere. How can you honor the entirety of yoga's teachings, moving beyond just the physical asana practice? Are you approaching the practice with deep respect and reverence for its holistic essence?

Reflect on avenues where you can educate yourself and take active steps to support the #BlackLivesMatter movement within your community. This might involve backing black-owned businesses, contributing to charities supporting black initiatives and equality, or engaging in challenging conversations to dismantle unjust systems that breed racism—especially with those closest to you.

What you bring into your awareness extends into the yoga classroom. As yoga practitioners and teachers, we bear a responsibility to remain informed, initiate conversations, and take meaningful action. Black lives matter, and it necessitates collective effort—from individuals, businesses, and communities—to foster a fair and just world.

Let us reiterate: we're not flawless, but we're making an effort. Community has always been our cornerstone, and we're committed to being part of the solution.

Om Shanti Shanti.

Warm regards, Kranti Yoga Team
